Procter & Gamble's approach to establishing product safety is based on the use of risk assessment. Risk assessment is a well-recognized process that has been used by government authorities, industry and the scientific community for several decades. It is designed to establish the likelihood that people or the environment will be exposed to harmful levels of a substance, based on a scientific evaluation of both the potential hazards of a chemical (e.g., toxicity), and potential exposures to it. Like all scientific methods, risk assessment is constantly evolving, as new knowledge becomes available. Here we provide perspective on some of the broad issues that are currently under discussion how to implement the overall risk assessment process. |
