P&G's safety organization
Our Safety Organization
Globally, more than 400 toxicologists, environmental scientists and engineers work full-time to ensure safety and regulatory compliance for the products marketed by Procter & Gamble. The total organization is sub-divided as described below.

Central Product Safety (CPS)
The scientists and engineers in P&G's Central Product Safety Group work on direct product support and on generic issues that encompass more than one product category, for example the development of new risk assessment approaches for the company's ingredients and products anywhere. They work closely with their colleagues in the various business units and in external relations as well as with the product developers and technologists. The Central Product Safety Group is further sub-divided into an Environmental Safety Organization and a Human Safety Organization.

Global Business Unit Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs (PS&RA)
Each Global Business Unit (GBU) is organized around a particular part of the business (e.g., home care, beauty care, family care, etc...). Scientists and regulatory experts in the business units concentrate on safety and regulatory compliance for that business unit and for their geographical areas. All products must be approved by the GBU organization before their reach the market (via a strict internal regulatory and safety clearance process). They are also in charge of consumer surveillance.

In addition to the people in CPS and P&SRA there are also hundreds of professionals in several other organizations are regularly involved in our safety work. These organizations are either part of our business units, affiliated with geographic regions, or operate at the corporate (global) level.

External Relations (ER)
People in External Relations monitor what goes on in the world outside of P&G and how it may affect the business in broad strokes. They provide feedback to the Central Product Safety Group and the business units so that they are aware of concerns that consumers and stakeholders may have about our products. They participate in task forces, give presentations and form alliances with other organizations when it makes good business sense to do so. They get the right people involved in projects and decision-making. In a sense, the people in External Relations are the ambassadors of the company.

Health, Safety and the Environment (HS&E)
The people in HS&E focus on P&G's manufacturing plants, especially employee safety, site environmental protection, waste management and regulatory compliance. They address any questions or concerns that arise about the company's manufacturing plants with local communities as well as national or regional stakeholders.
